I ask you to ask yourself what you think an Indin is. Is it just
a racial attribute, or does it have something to do with culture, spirit
and relationship too. The black men were originally called black
white men by Indins because they had the same values and interests as the
white men. Indins everywhere have shared the same beliefs in relationship--
family and tribal relationships as well as relationship to the land.
The most common bond we share between Nations is our relationship to the
land. This land still belongs to us. It is still our
responsibility to oversee its use, to speak for it as a living being, and
to stand up aginst its misuse and desecration.
But it's hard to speak for the Earth as a "Relative" if you really don't
"feel" an emotional bond with her. And if you've never been taught
that way it does seem strange. Even the new-age generations that intellectually
grasped the concept never developed a "real" family feeling toward the
rocks, lakes, rivers, oceans, trees, grasses, roots, berries, herbs, shrubs,
vegetables, dirt, minerals, animals, birds, fish, insects and other forms
of life that are our true relatives.
Once you do though, you feel a strength and balance you never felt before.
You are never alone on the earth, even if every other human is far away.
And you fit in, a part of the circle of life, separate from this
un-natural civilized world in which we now exist.
The Creator knew what was best for us. This is what gave us our power.
The test for our ancestors was to survive the loss of their world.
The test for their descendents will be our realization that though that
world is gone, we can create a new one to take its place. Gratitude
and emotional relationship with our land, and with all our relatives can
help us rebuild our Power. We have only to begin to see and recognize
our relatives everywhere, to speak to them, touch them and feel their strength.
To learn from their attributes and weaknesses. To apply their powers
to our own life and be grateful for our relatives, and our place among
them.
To begin this we must add one ingrediant that will be difficult to restore;
that is a true faith and belief in our Creator and his purpose for us here
on this land. While we may disagree about some aspects of that purpose,
one is clear. We were given this land to care for, to maintain, and
to protect for the generations to come. That responsibility has never
been lifted from our shoulders and it is a natural fit. We are the
people to do this. This is Our Responsibility. If we do nothing
else, this will preserve us as Indins. We have no choice. It
must become one of our first priorities, and I believe that eventually
the Anglo nations will listen to our words, gain respect for our ideals
and even join us in our work.
It is a natural purpose to unite our Peoples. We are the Guardians
of this Land. Be proud, be humble, and stand up for the Earth and
your Relatives-- be Indin.
